70 days to maturity for fresh beans, 100 days for dry beans. This historic runner bean variety dates back to the mid-1600s when it was first documented by German botanist Michael Titius in his Catalogues Plantarum. The vines grow 6-7 feet long and produce beautiful flowers that range from tangerine to cherry red. The flowers attract hummingbirds.
The pods are shorter than those of most other runner beans. When immature, they can be harvested and cooked like common green beans. As they mature, the beans transition in color from pink to purple and finally to a deep onyx black. These glossy black beans have a delicious flavor and cook to a creamy texture. They make an excellent substitute for kidney beans.
