Big Sandy Tomato
Big Sandy Tomato
90 days, indeterminate - Quite early for a large fruited variety (as early as 75 days in some locations), the large (but not too large) oblate, well formed scarlet red fruit average 12 ounces but can get larger. The variety is regular leaf, and the fruit are produced on vigorous indeterminate vines. There is a tang of tartness to the full, delicious flavor, making it stand out among the many sweeter-leaning heirlooms. It is very productive.
A family heirloom sent to Craig LeHoullier by West Virginia gardener Charlotte Mullens in 1990, this tomato seems to typify the old fashioned, scarlet "beefsteak" type of tomato remembered by so many older gardeners from their grandparents gardens or trips to farmstands. It was released by the Victory Seed Company to the gardening public for the 2025 season. Each packet contains approximately 20 seeds.
