Hello. I grew the American 572 tobacco this year, but got it started pretty late (July). I have been growing tobacco in Oregon for about 18 years. I like to chew it. I hang the whole plants in a barn and when the leaves are mostly brown and dry, yet flexible, I take them off the stalks and tie them into "hands," which I bring inside to avoid molding. This year I was way late, but the plants were very good growers. I was reluctant to cut the whole plants down, because the hummingbirds were enjoying the flowers, so this year, I picked individual leaves and hung them up...we will see if they dry down enough. I have enough supply for chewing though from years past. I definitely will grow this variety again properly! I am trying to save seeds from it, but since I planted it so late they may not be viable... I like to cook the cured leaves with honey and home-grown fennel seeds in a cast-iron pot and chew on it. Nicotine is a vitamin! Vitamin N!!!! I definitely recommend this variety. It grew very well and was a beautiful addition and conversation piece at the front of my CSA farm.
