Alicante

55 days — 'Alicante' is a French filet-type bush green bean, or haricot vert in French. Its compact plants are early, very productive, and exhibits disease resistance to Bean Common Mosaic Virus and Anthracnose. The pods are round in cross section, straight, thin, and best harvested when young and tender (about five inches long). They are uniformly dark green in color and tasty.

Considered a gourmet variety, they are typically harvested as a fresh green beans and served whole but certainly can be used in any recipe, such as soups and casserole, calling for green beans. Each packet contains one-half ounce, which is approximately 70 to 75 seeds.

Planting Instructions: Beans prefer well-drained, rich soil in a sunny location. Make sure that you keep them well watered in the summer heat. Don’t bother trying to get an early start with beans – you’ll waste a lot of seed! Beans are tender and you should not plant them until all danger of frost has passed and the soil remains above 65ºF.

Sow seeds 1½ inches deep, every two to three inches. Bush-type beans do not require support.

Pick the pods while young as they are more tender and succulent and less likely to be stringy.

★★★★★ Reliable, long-producing and versatile
By GardenHead on November 28, 2020

This is my third year planting Alicante. This year I planted on 6/17 with saved seed and started harvesting on 8/8. Production slowed during hot spells but picked up when it cooled down. Production at this time was higher than initial production! The last harvest was on 10/21, but they had plenty of blooms and baby beans. If they had been protected from the frost that night, they would have kept on truckin'. They are tender and flavorful with no strings even as bigger beans. I mixed the bigger beans with another green bean variety and canned them with very good results. The traditional filet size is excellent lightly steamed on a salad.

★★★★★ Ate them while picking!

These beans are yummy. I had trouble bringing in enough for a meal as I kept picking and eating. Never liked raw beans before, but these are great. Not stringy. Also prolific. Doubling my bean planting area this season!
