100 days to maturity. Ailsa Craig is a popular heirloom Spanish-type onion named after the solid rock island of Ailsa off the coast of Scotland. This long-day variety produces large, globe-shaped bulbs with small necks, typically averaging around 2 pounds but capable of reaching up to 5 pounds under ideal conditions. The firm, mild, and sweet bulbs are covered in attractive light golden skins. While not suitable for long-term storage, Ailsa Craig onions are excellent for fresh use.
Days to Maturity: 100
Lifespan: Annual
Sun Requirements: Full Sun
Best sowing Method: Direct Sow (in-situ)
Genetic Classification: Open Pollinated
Planting Instructions: Onions have a shallow root system and are adapted for well drained, rich, loam-type soil. Either start seeds indoors, or directly into the garden, in a sunny location, from April to mid-July.

Plant onion seeds ½ inch deep, two to four seeds per inch in rows spaced twelve to sixteen inches apart. Thin the plants to four inches apart to allow the bulbs room to develop. Use thinnings as green onions.
Ailsa Craig was first introduced in 1887 by David Murray, the gardener for the Marquis of Ailsa at Culzean Castle in Maybole, South Ayrshire, Scotland.
