Who Gets Kissed Sweet Corn
Who Gets Kissed Sweet Corn
78-84 days to maturity. 'Who Gets Kissed' is an exciting new OP sweet corn cultivar released by the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2014.
The breeders made their selections looking for dependable germination, good flavor, good tenderness, reasonably good disease resistance, and attractive ears. The cultivar is sugary enhanced (SE) with 7-8" ears on very short 5-6' plants. There is wide variability in this cultivar, which led the breeders to give it this name.
So what does "Who Gets Kissed" even mean?
Back in colonial America, they weren't growing hybrid corns and, as a result, there was always quite a bit of variability in their harvests. An oft-repeated tradition at "husking parties" was that whoever was lucky enough to find a red-kerneled ear won the contest and became the lucky person who got to receive or give a kiss from the person of their choosing. This name given to this new cultivar is a nod to the variability that gardeners can expect from this new OP sweet corn.
