85 days to maturity. Striped Japonica Flint Corn is a Japanese heirloom ornamental corn grown mainly for its colorful leaves. Plants reach up to 6 feet tall, and the foliage has stripes of green, white, pink, and yellow. Some stalks stay plain green, while others show all four colors in bands that run up and down the stalk. The tassels range from dark purple to wine red, and the ears hold deep burgundy to nearly black flint kernels.

This variety works well in edible landscapes, garden borders, and large containers. It looks good mixed in with annual flowers and foliage plants. The sturdy stalks can also serve as a living trellis for climbing plants such as sweet pea. Fresh stalks can be cut for bouquets, though they have a short vase life.

In the fall, the plants dry down and produce cobs of deep burgundy kernels that work well in autumn displays. Once fully dried, the kernels can be ground into meal, the same way you would use dent corn.
