It contains high levels of saponins, an ingredient in soap, and is deer resistant and drought tolerant. However, avoid planting near ponds or water gardens, as it is highly toxic to fish.
Used as a natural soap, the roots and leaves can be soaked or heated in water to extract saponins, producing a lather for non-irritating skin cleansers, shampoo, and delicate fabric soap. This easy-to-grow plant spreads up to 16 inches and blooms in late spring to early summer with small pink flowers. Tolerant of various soils, it naturalizes easily and self-reseeds. Prune after blooming to maintain a neat appearance. Each packet contains 0.25g which is approximately 120 seeds.
