'Silk Leaf' is an old "flue-cured" type tobacco, historically used for cigarette and pipe tobacco blends but also used for cigar filler and plug tobacco. The plants grows to about fifty inches tall when topped, or can reach six feet when allowed to flower. Its large leaves are broadest at the middle and narrower at the two equal ends, and are typically twelve inches wide by twenty-four inches long.
Available since at least the 1940s, the USDA noted that their seed was, "... a local selection obtained from E. G. Moss, a local tobacco grower in Gulliford County, North Carolina." It entered their collection on August 1, 1961. Our seed originated from this USDA accession, number PI 552331. Each packet contains about 100 seeds.
Tobacco plants are very interesting, ornamental, and have uses apart from consumption. This section of the website is intended for the historical and informational purposes of thinking adults. Anyone who has been raised since the turn of the 20th century already knows that tobacco can be addictive and can contribute to various medical ailments. If you do not smoke, it would seem illogical to start. We in no way encourage people to use any form of tobacco product.
