Ruby Queen

55 days — 'Ruby Queen' beets are round with smooth skin and shoulders and have a fine, buttery texture when properly cooked. Their interiors are a uniform dark red with nearly no zoning (rings of color). The tops are dull green with a bit of maroon veining and reach a height of ten to twelve inches.

Beets are rich in the beneficial carotenoid lycopene, which are effective at scavenging the molecules that have been linked to cancer-causing free radicals. Bright red vegetables are also shown to be useful in increasing blood flow and circulation which is beneficial for heart and lung health.

'Ruby Queen' became popular in the Northeast and as a canning variety. Performs well in poor soil. This beet also holds their shape well when crowded. Bred and introduced by Northrup King and company of Minneapolis, 'Ruby Queen' was an "All-America Selection®" winner in 1957. Each packet contains four grams, which is approximately 200 seeds. Each ounce contains about 620 seeds.

Planting Instructions: In a well-drained location that receives six to eight hours of full sun daily, sow seeds ¼ to ½ inch deep and one inch apart. The rows should be spaced 12 to 24 inches. Make sure that you have loosened the soil to one foot deep and rake smooth.

Firm the soil over the seeds and keep moist, making sure that the young roots do not dry out, until seedlings appear. When plants are 1½ to 3-inches tall, thin to three inches apart. The “thinnings” can be eaten as “baby greens.” Water weekly (or as required) in dry weather. Control weeds.

★★★★★ Stood the test

Growing them in a sandy compost soil with most watering from rainy weather and morning dew, was able to reap a decent crop in 65 days. Though many were small, was largely in part to weed growth and the neighboring squash over growing them

★★★★★ Fast growing with great taste

I have found this beet has done the best of all the ones I have tried. It grows well producing large tender beets that are sweet and tasty. I would highly recommend them.
