100 days โ€”ย 'Ruby' onions have a deep globe shape, are medium large in size, and are a deep-red color with firm, pungent flesh. If properly cured and stored in a cool, dark, dry location 'Ruby' is an excellent keeper as a storage variety. Bred by John Brozdowski, a private breeder from Pine Island, New York it was introduced commercially in 1964 by Asgrow Seed Company. 'Ruby' is an intermediate day variety.

Red onionsย are rich in the beneficial carotenoid lycopene, which are effective at scavenging the molecules that have been linked to cancer-causing free radicals. Bright red vegetables are also shown to be useful in increasing blood flow and circulation which is beneficial for heart and lung health.

Each packet contains one gram, which is approximately 200 seeds.

Planting Instructions: Onions have a shallow root system and are adapted for well drained, rich, loam-type soil. Either start seeds indoors, or directly into the garden, in a sunny location, from April to mid-July.

Plant onion seeds ยฝ inch deep, two to four seeds per inch in rows spaced twelve to sixteen inches apart. Thin the plants to four inches apart to allow the bulbs room to develop. Use thinnings as green onions.

Started indoor in February for spring transplant. Produced large crisp and pretty onions in full sun with regular watering.

โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… Grew well in dappled shade in long-day area, good keeper
By Alison Dvorak on December 30, 2016

I grew both Ruby (intermediate day) and Yellow Sweet Spanish (long day) onions here at 41N in an area of dappled shade as an experiment. I started them indoors in February and put them into the ground in April. Ruby did well, growing into medium to large onions even though they were in dappled shade. (Yellow Sweet Spanish didn't germinate as well and then didn't grow as well, so I ended up with only a few very small yellow onions--I'm guessing dappled shade was just not enough sun for them even in my officially long day area.) My Ruby onions have been good keepers--I'm still using them now at the end of December.
