First time growing bulbing onions from seed and these were confidence boosting! Germinated well indoors, and despite late March freeze/snow storm, they still formed medium to large heads by mid summer. Good storage, still using them for salads and cooking into late December, but running out of them! We will definitely be planting more for 2026.

Started indoor in February for spring transplant. Produced large crisp and pretty onions in full sun with regular watering.

I grew both Ruby (intermediate day) and Yellow Sweet Spanish (long day) onions here at 41N in an area of dappled shade as an experiment. I started them indoors in February and put them into the ground in April. Ruby did well, growing into medium to large onions even though they were in dappled shade. (Yellow Sweet Spanish didn't germinate as well and then didn't grow as well, so I ended up with only a few very small yellow onions--I'm guessing dappled shade was just not enough sun for them even in my officially long day area.) My Ruby onions have been good keepers--I'm still using them now at the end of December.
