55 days — An old German pickling variety. 'Rhinish Pickle' cucumber fruit are crunchy, have small bumps and black spines and are best harvested at about four inches in length. We have, however, harvested much larger sized fruit in the middle of summer that have proved to be excellent for salads and slicing. Each packet contains one gram, which is approximately 25 to 30 seeds.

Planting Instructions: Cucumbers grow best with long, hot, humid days with maximum sunshine and warm nights. Plants are extremely susceptible to frost. Sow seeds outside only after danger of frost when soil has warmed. Make a second sowing 4 to 5 weeks later for a late summer or early fall harvest. For an earlier harvest and to reduce the threat of insect damage to seedlings, start a few plants indoors in individual pots (or trays with separate compartments) about a month before your last spring frost date.

Sowing: To seed in rows, plant seeds 1 inch deep and about 6 inches apart. To plant in hills, plant four or five seeds in 1-foot-diameter circles set 5 to 6 feet apart.

I planted "Pick a Bushel" and Rhinish, after seeing a video about it from a Michigan gardener....both as an afterthought, because I have failed at cukes in the past....at the end of cattle panel tomato beds as I had an elaborate 8 bed cattle panel tomato setup and large hot pepper beds. The Pick a Bushel came and went very quickly (family emergency I ignored cukes for several weeks, and the pick a bushel blasted fruit, overmatured, and died around July 15) The Rhinish is elegant...thin skin, small seeds, delicate flavor, has octopussed through the tomatoes and over my head in the panel arch and each harvest (daily) is an easter egg hunt. I became a mid level pickler because of the Rhinish, Aug 25 and still harvesting every other day or so zone 4a. Elongated football shape...pointy-ish ends, not the blocky standard of Boston et al. Because this Cuke loves me I love it. Already planning 2025 garden around it and the pickling tradition which has visited upon us. Adding lots more garlic, coriander, mustard (for seed), and dill to my pickle, hot sauce and tomato sauce garden. 4a is savage: start indoors in Feb, March and April, hold your breath when you set them out in May...some years June 1 is the only safe bet.

I have planted the 'Rhinish Pickle' several years in a row. Production was high but short lived. Flavor was good - better if picked small.

Perfect germination, bordering on excessive (wink). Heavy producer, succulent fruits, long vines perfect for trellising and able to support the cukes. Most definitely a 5-star choice.
