Red Shiso is also known as "Purple Shiso" which more accurately describes the color. Red Shiso is a flavorful, aromatic herb commonly used in Asian cuisine, particularly Japanese and Korean dishes. Shiso is also known as Japanese Basil or Beefsteak Plant. Its broad, serrated green leaves have a unique taste, combining notes of cinnamon, clove, and cumin with a subtle spiciness. The plant is not only grown for its edible leaves but also for its small, delicate edible flowers, which add a tasty (and attractive) element to salads, noodle bowls, and rice dishes.

Shiso is drought-tolerant once established, and an excellent choice for low-maintenance herb gardens or container growing. It attracts pollinators when in bloom. Plants typically grow 1.5 to 3 feet tall and perform well in full sun to partial shade. Though annual, shiso readily self-seeds in warmer climates, returning year after year.

Shiso has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, where it was valued for its soothing effects on digestion, seasonal discomforts, and mild respiratory issues. Its aromatic oils, especially perillaldehyde and rosmarinic acid, have been said to calm the stomach and support overall wellness.
Shiso needs to be stratified before sowing. To achieve the best results, we recommend storing the seeds in an airtight container in a refrigerator or freezer before sowing. Soaking the seeds in water for 12-24 hours prior to sowing hastens germination too. Sow in the spring outdoors after all danger of frost is over, or start indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost date. Soil temperature of 65°–75°F is recommended. Sow the seeds shallowly, as they need light to germinate.
