Promise (or 1898) Half Runner Bush Green Bean

Phaseolus vulgaris

Price: $3.45

SKU: 3030461

60 days - These beans were interchangeably called 'Promise', 'Phillips' and '1898' by those that have maintained this family heirloom over the years. It is a bean variety that has been grown by the homesteading Phillips family of Promise, Oregon since 1898.

John Chandler Phillips and Emily Phillips, pioneer settlers that named Promise, Oregon and Mike Dunton's Great-great grandfather, purchased these beans before heading out by wagon to their homestead. Despite the images that its name may conjure, Promise is a remote community in a very harsh and unforgiving corner of the state of Oregon. 'Promise' bean is prolific and necessarily hardy. It helped to sustain the family through very difficult times.

The small white seeds produce semi-erect, half runner type plants that tend to sprawl and can benefit from some support. Good fresh or canned. In 1999, we received less than one ounce of seed from Mildred Axmaker of Colton, Oregon (Granddaughter of John Phillips) and we have been multiplying it out ever since. In 2004, the gardening public got their first chance at trying these beans.
Genetic Classification: Open Pollinated
Planting Instructions: Beans prefer well-drained, rich soil in a sunny location. Make sure that you keep them well watered in the summer heat. Don’t bother trying to get an early start with beans – you’ll waste a lot of seed! Beans are tender and you should not plant them until all danger of frost has passed and the soil remains above 65ºF.

Sow seeds 1½ inches deep, every two to three inches. Bush-type beans do not require support.

Pick the pods while young as they are more tender and succulent and less likely to be stringy.
