Pennlan is a cigar filler variety with compact, beautiful, uniform, healthy plants. The leaves are short and oval in shape. It is resistant to tobacco mosaic and wildfire diseases, with moderate resistance to black root rot.

Developed by the joint efforts of tobacco personnel from the Pennsylvania Agricultural Experiment Station and the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service and released in 1977. USDA Nicotiana Collection accession number PI 552496.
