Classified as a cigar wrapper type tobacco, 'Paulista' was historically used for that purpose. The columnar-shaped plants grow to about forty inches tall when topped, and four to five feet tall when allowed to flower.
Its leaves have smooth to slightly puckered surfaces, are broadest at the middle and narrower at the two equal ends, but with the width over one-half the length. Typical leaves are ten inches wide by sixteen inches long, and according the USDA tests, it averages ten milligrams of nicotine per gram of cured leaf.
