★★★★☆ My Roma variety of choice
By Gio (North county San Diego) on April 14, 2024

I've grown Roma VF and San Marzano. Both of these produce well but have issues with blossom end rot even though I drip irrigate. Not a lot but enough to aggravate. I don't get any BER, I mean none with this variety albeit slightly smaller fruit which is ok because they slip into my jars easily. The Martinos get about 3-feet tall, very bushy with tons of tomatoes . I find the Roma VF very dry and somewhat hollow at times and the San Marzanos while producing big heavy beautiful fruit need to be pruned to maintain height and produce those bigger fruits. Otherwise they would grow into gigantic sprawling plants with many smaller tomatoes. If I could find an indeterminate San Marzano, I might reconsider it.
