Manny Cucumber is a hybrid Beit Alpha type bred for greenhouse growing, though it also does well in the open field. It is parthenocarpic, meaning it sets fruit without pollination, so it does not need bees or hand pollination to produce a crop. Manny can be grown on a trellis or along the ground, though yields are higher when trellised. It also works well in containers.

The fruit is dark green, smooth, and shiny, with thin skin and no spines. Cucumbers grow 5 to 7 inches long and about 1 1/2 inches wide, with a light rib pattern. The flesh is crisp and mildly sweet, good for fresh eating, salads, or pickling. Manny has intermediate resistance to Cucumber Vein Yellows Virus (CVYV) and Powdery Mildew (PM).

Planting Instructions: Cucumbers grow best with long, hot, humid days with maximum sunshine and warm nights. Plants are extremely susceptible to frost. Sow seeds outside only after danger of frost when soil has warmed. Make a second sowing 4 to 5 weeks later for a late summer or early fall harvest. For an earlier harvest and to reduce the threat of insect damage to seedlings, start a few plants indoors in individual pots (or trays with separate compartments) about a month before your last spring frost date.

Sowing: To seed in rows, plant seeds 1 inch deep and about 6 inches apart. To plant in hills, plant four or five seeds in 1-foot-diameter circles set 5 to 6 feet apart.
