Malabar Spinach

60 days to maturity. Not a true spinach, rather a perennial tropical plant, thriving in warm weather, tolerant of heat and humidity. Will not overwinter in cooler climates, but will produce a good harvest as an annual. This variety has green stems, and dark green thick fleshy leaves. Known as Basella or alugbati in the Philippines.

Sow seeds in late spring/early summer once soil termperature is at least 60°F. Can also start indoors 6-8 weeks before planting outdoors. Keep soil warm until seeds emerge. Seeds will not germinate in cool soil. Keep soil constantly moist, or they will flower, and the leaves will turn bitter. Train to a trellis for best results. Harvest the young tips and leaves throughout the season.
