70 days to maturity. A Texas Agricultural Extension Service release from 1992, the Jaloro is the first yellow jalapeno ever developed. This open pollinated heirloom grows on compact plants that reach average 2 feet tall, but can grow up to 4 feet. Fruit measures about 2 to 3 inches long with thick walls and a firm, juicy texture.

Pods start green, shift to golden yellow, and deepen to orange, then red when fully mature. "Oro" refers to gold, and it fits. Plants show strong disease resistance.

Heat level sits around 5,000 Scoville units, similar to standard jalapenos but with a mildly fruity flavor. Works well for poppers, salsa, and any recipe that benefits from color variation. The peppers are meaty and crunchy when fresh.

Sow seeds in sterile potting mix, eight weeks prior to your last expected frost date. Plant seeds at a depth equal to two times their thickness. The optimum soil temperature is 80°F. Germination can be erratic. The most common cause of poor germination is the result of uneven planting depths.

Transplant only after night temperatures average above 55°F. Plants are tender and thrive in warm weather. Blossoms drop if temperatures fall below 60°F or if they get too much nitrogen.
