Jacob's Cattle Slow Food USA - Ark of Taste

90 days — There are conflicting stories regarding the origin of this bean. One legend is that they were originally cultivated by the Passamaquoddy Indians in Maine. Another is that New Englander's named the bean from the Biblical story of Jacob and the spotted cattle. By any account, they are certainly an heirloom and date back to at least the 1700s.

'Jacob's Cattle' beans were also a favorite of the Victory Seed Company's founder, Mike Dunton's, maternal grandfather Walter Axmaker. Grandpa Axmaker grew them ervery year in his garden in the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range near Colton, Oregon since at least the 1950s. We obtained our original seed from him in the late 1980s. The beans are sweet, meaty, and good as a baking bean. Each packet contains one ounce, which is approximately 45 seeds.

Planting Instructions: Beans prefer well-drained, rich soil in a sunny location. Make sure you keep them well watered in the summer heat.

Beans are a tender vegetable and you should not plant them until all danger of frost has passed and the soil remains above 65ºF. Sow seeds .1-1½ inches deep, every two to three inches. Bush-type beans do not require support.

Allow pods to remain on the plant until they are brittle and open easily. However, if you live in an area with a short growing season, harvest as close to dry as possible and finish drying indoors. Rain and freezing temps will damage beans.

★★★★★ Amazing bean.
By David Emigh on December 1, 2013

Perfect germination, almost weather indifferent (week of solid rain right after sprouting wasn't nice). Upright plants thick enough to develop bark, constant, heavy production (not quite indeterminate, but close) of enormous beans. By far and away the best green beans ever, wonderful flavor dried. This bean will officially be both my sole green bean planting from now on, and a welcome soup bean.
