Dorotheanthus bellidiformis

Price: $3.25

SKU: 40000421

Ice Plant (also known as Livingston Daisy or Mesembryanthemum) is a low-growing, spreading succulent grown for its dazzling, daisy-like blooms and shimmering foliage. This colorful mix produces vibrant flowers in shades of orange, pink, purple, red, white, and yellow. Ice Plant is perfect for borders, rock gardens, containers, and hanging baskets.

A warm-weather favorite, Ice Plant thrives in full sun and sandy or gritty soil with excellent drainage. Its succulent, bright green leaves are covered in glistening papillae, tiny water-storing cells that reflect sunlight and give the foliage a frosted, crystal-like appearance, which likely inspired the name "Ice Plant."

Ideal for xeriscaping and drought-tolerant landscapes, this plant typically reaches 4-8 inches in height and spreads 10-14 inches. It blooms most heavily from late spring through summer and attracts bees and butterflies to the garden. Once established, Ice Plant is very low maintenance and handles dry conditions well, making it a reliable ground cover for sunny, well-drained spaces.

How to Sow Ice Plant Seeds
Ice Plant seeds can be sown directly in the garden or started indoors. For direct sowing, after all danger of frost has passed, lightly press the seeds into the soil surface without covering them, as they require light to germinate.

To start seeds indoors, plant them 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Use a sterile seed-starting mix in flats or cell packs, and keep the temperature around 70°F. Germination typically takes 14-28 days. Transplant seedlings carefully outdoors after the last frost.

Growing Conditions
Ice plant prefers full sun and well-drained, sandy or rocky soil. In very hot climates, provide some afternoon shade. Once established, these succulents are drought-tolerant and require minimal watering. Avoid overwatering, especially early on, as they are sensitive to excess moisture.
