Ice Cream Sunflower (Helianthus debilis) is a coastal native wildflower, set apart from common garden sunflowers by both its species and its soft coloring. The blooms are creamy white to lemon-yellow, each ringed with a bright yellow halo and a dark chocolate-brown center. Plants branch freely and reach 5 to 7 feet tall, producing many 5 to 8 inch flowers across the season.
Also called beach sunflower or cucumberleaf sunflower, this open-pollinated heirloom is native to the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic coasts of the United States. It grows as a perennial in warm climates with no frost, and as an annual where winters go below freezing.
The flowers bring in native bees and butterflies, and birds feed on the ripe seeds. The plants handle dry spells and salty conditions well, so they hold up in sandy soil and work as a ground stabilizer in coastal spots. They fit home gardens, mass plantings, and cut flower arrangements.

Planting Instructions: Sunflowers are very easy to grow and because of their size, quite spectacular for a child's garden.
Sow directly outdoors, ¾ inches deep. Thin the plants at first to 8 inches and then to two feet to avoid crowding. (We have had good luck transplanting)
Water regularly and weed between the plants to eliminate competition.
Harvest the seeds by cutting the flowering heads when the backs have turned yellow. Complete the drying by hanging them upside down in a warm, dry place.
