85 days to maturity. Holy Molé hybrid pasilla-type hot pepper. It won an All-America Selections award in 2007. Pasilla peppers are a key ingredient in Mexican mole sauce, and Holy Molé was bred for that use.
The peppers grow 7 to 9 inches long and about 1 1/2 inches wide, with thick, crunchy walls. They start out glossy dark green and, if left on the plant, turn a deep chocolate brown over about two weeks. The flavor is nutty and tangy with mild heat, rated 1,000 - 1,500 Scoville Heat Units.
Green peppers are ready about 85 days after transplanting. At this stage, people often slice them for toppings or use them in baked dishes. Fully ripe brown peppers are usually dried and ground into a spice, or used in mole sauce and other Mexican dishes.
Plants grow about 3 feet tall, with green stems, green leaves, and white flowers. That size works well in patio containers as well as garden beds. In side-by-side trials, Holy Molé grew more vigorously, produced earlier, and yielded much more than similar peppers. Part of the higher yield comes from resistance to two common viruses that can stunt pepper plants and cut production. It grows best in full sun and does well in summer heat. This variety was developed in the USA.

Sow seeds in sterile potting mix, eight weeks prior to your last expected frost date. Plant seeds at a depth equal to two times their thickness. The optimum soil temperature is 80°F. Germination can be erratic. The most common cause of poor germination is the result of uneven planting depths.
Transplant only after night temperatures average above 55°F. Plants are tender and thrive in warm weather. Blossoms drop if temperatures fall below 60°F or if they get too much nitrogen.
