A later maturing variety, 'Goyano' is historically used, and classified as cigar "filler." It was also used as twist tobacco. The plants are pyramidal in shape, grow to about sixty inches tall when topped, or can reach six to seven feet when allowed to flower. Its flowers are an attractive, deep-pink to red color.
Its egg-shaped leaves attach to the plants at the broader end. Typical leaves are ten inches wide by twenty inches long and according to USDA tests, it averages 40.3 mg of nicotine per gram of cured leaf.
'Goyano' is an old Brazilian variety. Our seed originated from USDA accession number PI 260370. The USDA commented that the seeds were donated into their collection on September 4, 1959 by the Instituto Agronomico do Estado de Sao Paulo, Campinas, Brazil. Our seed stock was sent to us by David Pendergrass from Tennessee.
Tobacco plants are very interesting, ornamental, and have uses apart from consumption. This section of the website is intended for the historical and informational purposes of thinking adults. Anyone who has been raised since the turn of the 20th century already knows that tobacco can be addictive and can contribute to various medical ailments. If you do not smoke, it would seem illogical to start. We in no way encourage people to use any form of tobacco product.
