Giant Marconi Pepper is a Italian-type sweet pepper and a 2001 All-America Selections winner. It is one of the largest Italian sweet peppers you can grow. The long, tapered fruit reaches 6 to 8 inches long and about 3 inches wide, with a slightly lobed tip. In shape, it looks like a cross between a classic Marconi and a Lamuyo-type pepper.
Giant Marconi peppers ripen from deep green to red. Green peppers are ready to pick about 72 days after transplanting, with some growers reporting fruit as early as 63 days. Peppers ripen to red in around 80 days.
This pepper works well raw in salads, but it is at its best grilled or roasted. It is also a good choice for stuffing, stir fries, frying, and sandwiches. Its size and shape suit the Italian fryer pepper market, and it tends to sell well at farmers markets. The plants grow about 30 inches tall and resist Potato Virus Y (PVY) and Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV). Giant Marconi keeps setting fruit even in less than ideal weather, and regular picking keeps the plants producing until frost.

Sow seeds in sterile potting mix, eight weeks prior to your last expected frost date. Plant seeds at a depth equal to two times their thickness. The optimum soil temperature is 80°F. Germination can be erratic. The most common cause of poor germination is the result of uneven planting depths.
Transplant only after night temperatures average above 55°F. Plants are tender and thrive in warm weather. Blossoms drop if temperatures fall below 60°F or if they get too much nitrogen.
