SKU: 10008231Naughty Marietta is a dwarf French marigold that produces single, medium-sized flowers in golden yellow with a bold mahogany blotch at the center. Plants are very short, typically growing around 14 inches tall. Named after the 1935 film of the same name, this variety has been a garden staple for decades, earning an All-America Selections award back in 1947.
It blooms from summer through the first frost, and it does so without much fuss. It is easy to start from seed, fairly drought tolerant, and attracts butterflies. The flowers are fragrant, and yes, technically edible, though the flavor is as strong and pungent as the scent.
Plant it near your vegetable garden to help deter harmful soil nematodes and other insect pests. It works well in containers, beds, borders, and pollinator gardens.

For the earliest blooms, start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Otherwise, sow directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Seeds germinate in 7 to 21 days under full light. Plant 2–3 seeds ¼ inch deep and space them about 6 inches apart in well-drained, evenly moist soil in full sun.
Naughty Marietta marigolds are relatively low-maintenance but require good air circulation and drainage to prevent disease. They may be susceptible to powdery mildew, root rot, leaf spots, and Botrytis in humid or poorly ventilated conditions. While marigolds generally have no serious pest issues, it's a good idea to check regularly for spider mites and thrips.
