Earl Grey larkspur grows tall spikes of dusky, silvery purple flowers, reaching 3 to 4 feet, with some plants growing as tall as 5 feet in good conditions. The grey purple shade is unusual for larkspur and makes it stand out in the garden.

This is an open pollinated annual, and seed is easy to save. The flowers work well fresh in bouquets and also dry nicely, holding their shape and color after drying. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds are attracted to the blooms.

Earl Grey larkspur is cold tolerant and may overwinter in mild climates or in a greenhouse, though most growers treat it as an annual. Because the flower spikes grow tall and full, staking is recommended to keep the stems upright.

Note: all parts of this plant are considered poisonous if consumed by humans or livestock. Keep it away from pets, grazing animals, and children.

Larkspur grows best with 1-2 weeks of cold stratification before planting it. They can also be planted in the fall, and will germinate in the spring. Larkspur is difficult to transplant, so it's best to sow the seeds directly into your flower bed. Cover seeds lightly, no more than 1/8" deep. Space seeds 4" apart, thinning to 10-12" after germination.
