Costoluto Genovese Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Price: $3.45

SKU: 34020921

80 days, indeterminate  - Italian variety from the early 1800s. Very unique tomato, deeply ribbed shape with bright red fruits. The word costoluto is italian for ribbed. 6-8oz fruits. Delicious slightly tart flavor. Performs exceptionally well in hot weather, but will continue to produce even once the weather turns cooler. This has been a family favorite of ours in Texas for many years.
Color: Red
Harvest Timing: Main Crop / Mid-Season
Genetic Classification: Open Pollinated
Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.

Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.

★★★☆☆ Plant later in the season.

Plants started out like gangbusters. Lots of big blooms but not many fruit even using an electric toothbrush. Plants got a spotted disease on leaves and stems early on. I've tried for 2 years. Skipped a year and will try again this year but wait till April-May to set out transplants. I think the wet, cool dewy mornings in March although the days are typically 75-80 degrees set the stage for disease in my North County San Diego climate. I'll be trying this approach for many other varieties as well. I did get a few nice tomatoes and I liked them for sauce.
