Chioggia (Bull's Eye) Beet
Price: $15.20
SKU: 3040063Slicing reveals alternating red and white rings, like a target. The mild flavored tops can also be used raw or cooked as greens.
Firm the soil over the seeds and keep moist, making sure that the young roots do not dry out, until seedlings appear. When plants are 1½ to 3-inches tall, thin to three inches apart. The “thinnings” can be eaten as “baby greens.” Water weekly (or as required) in dry weather. Control weeds.

I am not usually fond of beets, but these were excellent. They are much sweeter than the others I have tried, and have less of the earthy flavor. Most beet greens are too bitter for my taste, but these have very little flavor.

Perfect germ, no pest or disease problems to report. I put them in as a follow-up crop when the Tall Tops were done, and they didn't mind the summer heat at all. Nice shape, size, sweet flavor. A little sensitive to crowding, but that's my fault.

Germination has been about 75%. I have high hopes. I will return and add more in a couple months.

We are amazed at the size and quality of Chiogga. We love to peel and slice them to show the red and white zoning, and grill them (grilled beets are delicious - grilling can temper the earthy flavor that some people don't like, and adds a bit of flavor complexity and tames the sweetness).
