Celosia spicata
Price: $3.39
SKU: 10001931Celosia 'Flamingo Feather' is a warm-season annual grown for its soft pink, foxtail-shaped flower spikes. It also goes by Wheat Celosia. The spikes start out pale and deepen to pink through mid-summer, with a silvery shimmer near the base that gives them a glossy, semi-dry look.
Plants grow upright on tall, straight stems, usually 24 to 36 inches, with few leaves to strip off. It is an early producer, and the flowers keep their color whether you use them fresh or dried.
It fits well in bouquets and also works in garden borders, beds, containers, and pollinator plantings. The variety is open-pollinated, heat tolerant once established, and handles humidity. It will self-sow if you let it.

Starting seeds indoors (recommended): Start 4 to 8 weeks before your last frost date. This celosia needs light to germinate, so press seeds onto the surface and cover only barely, or with a thin layer of vermiculite. Keep the soil at 68 to 80°F. Bottom water or mist lightly so you don't wash the seeds around. Sprouts usually show in 7 to 20 days. After they germinate, grow seedlings a bit cooler, around 63 to 68°F. Use roomy cells so roots don't get crowded, which can trigger early flowering on stunted plants.
Transplanting out: Harden off seedlings and move them outside about two weeks after the last frost, once the soil is warm. Space plants 8 to 12 inches apart.
Direct sowing: Only direct sow in areas with a long, warm season. Wait until after the last frost and until the soil has warmed, then sow about 1/8 inch deep.
