Candy Cane Chocolate Cherry is a mini bell pepper with variegated foliage and colorful striped fruit unlike most normal peppers. Even as young plants, the leaves are green and white striped. As the pepper fruits mature, their color shifts from green with white stripes to deep chocolate and cherry red.

The plants grow well in containers or garden beds, with or without support. From transplant, expect green fruit in about 55–60 days and fully ripe fruit in 70–75 days.

Candy Cane Chocolate Cherry won the 2022 People's Choice Green Thumb Award.

Sow seeds in sterile potting mix, eight weeks prior to your last expected frost date. Plant seeds at a depth equal to two times their thickness. The optimum soil temperature is 80°F. Germination can be erratic. The most common cause of poor germination is the result of uneven planting depths.

Transplant only after night temperatures average above 55°F. Plants are tender and thrive in warm weather. Blossoms drop if temperatures fall below 60°F or if they get too much nitrogen.

★★★★☆ Good Production - Not My Favorite Pepper
By Caleb H (Los Angeles, CA) on August 8, 2026

I am always on the hunt for a sweet pepper that can earn a permanent spot in my garden. These were recommended as an upgrade to typical bell pepper varieties. The germination was fantastic on these seeds and I ended up with 6 healthy plants going in my pepper bed in late spring. They took a little while to get going, but eventually each compact plant had an average of 4-6+ peppers growing on them. The plants are interesting looking, with a variegated pattern on the leaves.

The fruit is beautiful with noticeable stripes throughout its growth. The largest peppers were about 4" long, but most were smaller - much smaller than a bell, but larger than a snacking/lunchbox pepper. The pepper walls were quite thin with a crunchy (almost tough) texture. I tried them both green and dark red and I didn't find them particularly sweet at either stage. Overall, I was unimpressed with the flavor and will not grow this one again next year.

If you are looking for this particular variety, then you can trust Victory for good quality seeds that will turn into healthy plants. However, my personal quest for a delicious and reliable sweet pepper continues.
