Last year I grew a couple of Speckled Roman plants as an experiment, along with 6 other types of tomatoes. These did very well, growing to over 6 feet tall and covered with fruit. Most of the garden plants were confused by smoke from forest fires last summer. All of my tomatoes were slow coming on, and some never did ripen. The Speckled Romans were the first to show color. They ripened to a deep red with yellow stripes. This variety has a rich flavor, perhaps a little more acidic than the other tomatoes in my garden. I thought they tasted wonderful! I used them mostly for cooking, but also fresh in salsa. These were also very good keepers. I wrapped them individually in newspaper, then stored them in cardboard boxes in an unheated room. I took them out to ripen as needed. I had fresh home grown tomatoes until the first week in December! I will be growing these again this year, and Speckled Romans will most likely have a place in my garden every year.
