Romanesco Broccoli or Roman Cauliflower

95 days — Although related to broccoli, Romanesco is actually a variant of cauliflower. Its heads incorporate a unique, beautiful spiraling pattern that is a light-green color. The plants looks like typical cauliflower plants. For you mathematical types out there, the pattern is not only a graphic representation of a Fibonacci series, it is also a logarithmic spiral that is about as close to a fractal as can occur in nature.

Widely grown in northern Italy, some say that it has a texture and flavor superior to broccoli. To be fair, since this is a type of cauliflower, the comparison is quite literally akin to comparing apples to oranges. In Northern areas, does best when planted for a fall harvest. Each packet contains 0.5 gram, which is about 130 seeds.
Planting Instructions: Start indoors, six weeks prior to your last expected frost date. Transplant when three inches tall. Plant the seedlings about one inch deeper than they were in your pots. Work ½ cup of organic fertilizer into the soil with each transplant.

You can also plant directly in the soil, at a depth of about ¼ to ½ inch, in mid-Spring. Thin to a final plant spacing of 15 to 18 inches in rows two to three feet apart.

Avoid providing too much nitrogen. Broccoli likes cool weather and will head too early in warm temperatures. Harvest the heads before the individual flowers mature and begin to open.
