58 days — 'National Pickling', also known as 'National Pickle', 'National Association Pickling' and simply 'National', produces fruit that are straight, medium green in color, black-spined, and average 1¾ by six inches in size. You can start picking at about two inches in length. The vigorous vines are very productive.

It was bred by the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station for the National Pickle Packers Association and released in 1924. Henry Field presented it as one of "Henry's Favorites" in his 1933 seed annual. Each packet contains one gram, which is approximately 25 to 30 seeds.
Planting Instructions: Cucumbers grow best with long, hot, humid days with maximum sunshine and warm nights. Plants are extremely susceptible to frost. Sow seeds outside only after danger of frost when soil has warmed. Make a second sowing 4 to 5 weeks later for a late summer or early fall harvest. For an earlier harvest and to reduce the threat of insect damage to seedlings, start a few plants indoors in individual pots (or trays with separate compartments) about a month before your last spring frost date.

Sowing: To seed in rows, plant seeds 1 inch deep and about 6 inches apart. To plant in hills, plant four or five seeds in 1-foot-diameter circles set 5 to 6 feet apart.

Generally I get the McPick or Boston Pickling for making pickles. Tried these last year with excellent results. Kept about 2 to 3 days in the refrigerator to get enough to make a batch. Pickles stayed very crisp using same recipes as other varieties. Prolific throughout the season, very prolific towards the end.

These are one of my favorite things in the garden this year! Direct sowed in early May and I'm picking a handful or two per day now in July! Makes great tasting pickles as well!
