Longhandle Dipper

120 days — As its name implies, the matured, dried fruit of 'Longhandle Dipper' can be fashioned into the shape of a ladle or dipper. The very long necks of gourds make a perfect handle and the "bulb" end can be cut into the dipper shape. Some folks also use them for birdhouses. Like winter squash, 'Longhandle Dipper' gourds are vining type plants. Each packet contains three grams, which is approximately 18 seeds.

Planting Instructions: Choose a location that has warm, well-drained and fertile soil. Work in plenty of organic matter and mulch to conserve moisture, as gourds are heavy water consumers.

Sow directly in garden after threat of frost has passed. Seed will not germinate if soil is too cold. Sow one inch deep in hills or rows spaced 24 to 30 inches apart.

These plants are grown like winter squash and require a lot of space and a long season for the fruits to reach full size.

People are always astonished when they see my gourd vines and this is my favorite variety. These were especially vigorous, climbing over the garden wall and covering the adjacent shed. I gave a couple extra plants to a friend and they grew to the top of the telephone pole in her yard. The fruits came in plentiful and perfectly rounded at the bottom. The barn rafters are full of gourds that have been drying all winter. If you like growing fun stuff, I highly recommend growing these!
