Japanese Millet
Echinochloa crusgallii var. frumentacea
Echinochloa crusgallii var. frumentacea
45 to 60 days — Also known as "Billion-dollar grass," 'Japanese' is an annual millet. Grown for both animal and human consumption, it reaches one to five feet in height depending on soil and climate, and its leaves are coarse. The seed-heads are four to eight inches long, light-purple to reddish-purple in color, and have awnless seeds.
Sow seeds after all danger of frost has passed in the Spring. Seed may be broadcast sown if soil remains damp, or otherwise sow one-quarter to one-half of an inch deep in the soil. Each gram contains approximately 250 seeds.
