80 days โ 'Fordhook 242', also sold as 'Fordhook Two-Forty-Two',[4] plants are bush-type reaching sixteen to twenty inches tall producing pods that contain three to five large, flat greenish-white seeds. Although it performs well in Northern and Maritime climates, it is described as being developed as a heat-resistant variety for the South. Vaughan's 1945 seed catalog introduced it as follows:
When Henry A. Dreer of Philadelphia introduced it to his customers in their 1946 seed annual, they stated:
Developed by the USDA AES, Beltsville, Maryland as an improved selection of the old W. Atlee Burpee 'Fordhook' Lima. 'Fordhook 242' was introduced and an "All-America Selectionยฎ" Bronze Medal winner in 1945.[1,2] The seeds are large. Each ounce contains approximately 25 seeds.
Great bean with a great taste. Beans are classified as a bush type, but the plants will get about 3 to 4 foot tall. I would recommend small poles for additional support. Beans are very productive with heavy yields. The plant will produce most of the beans in about a 4 week time frame. If you are eating the beans fresh, they have a great buttery taste. I steamed them for about 20 minutes which really makes the beans tender. Great beans and also fast growing. I used a Triple-10 type liquid fertilized which really helped the plants grow. They do need a lot of water especially in hot weather so the plants don\'t wilt. Each pod contains 3 or 4 seeds. This is a great variety and easy to grow.
