SKU: 3030311These fava beans were planted in late March2021 in a high altitude, dry climate with large daily temperature swings. They were slow to sprout, slow to grow, had some sort of black mildew on the flowers & top leaves, and produced empty pods at first. When our monsoon season kicked in during July, they thrived and produced many pods. I originally chose them because, as a vetch (not a true bean), they could be companion planted with brassicas and onions- what a great nitrogen fixing solution! But, the high desert strikes again. I may try planting them in the fall for an early spring harvest. Otherwise, desert gardneners, I might avoid this variety/plant all together.
All the plants came right up grew wonderful. The cold did not slow them down. We did have a really cold snap that killed them, about 10 degrees did them in. This winter is much colder than the norm here. I still have some seeds to start up here about the first of march so I cant wait to give them another go. I figured the winter would kill them but it was worth a shot.
