This variety is representative of
a primitive, or pre-cultivated tomato trait. That is, they are not
fleshy all the way through like our modern tomatoes. According to Will W.
Tracy in his 1919 publication, "Tomato
Culture", the fruit of the original species from which our
modern cultivated tomatoes have developed was, "doubtless a comparatively
small two to many-celled berry, with comparatively dry central placenta
and thin walls".
This variety, called Red
Stuffing, is
very similar in structure to a small bell pepper. It is mild
flavored and excellent stuffed with slaw, Louie or tuna salad. Can
be served baked or fresh.
For
variety, try a mix of
red stuffing,
yellow stuffing
and
striped cavern
tomatoes!

Very prolific on
indeterminate
plants. The fruit is orange-red with 3 to 4 cells. The center
seed cluster, similar to that of a bell pepper, is easily removed which makes this tomato ideal for serving as an edible container for your
favorite cold or hot salad.
