Pop Rocks®
"Popping Candy"

In 1956, General Foods research scientist, William A. Mitchell invented aPop Rocks process of using high pressure to capture carbon dioxide in hard candy.  But it was not until 1975 that the technology was commercialized and introduced to the general public as Pop Rocks.

The unique sensation is caused by small amounts of carbonation being released as the candy melts in the mouth.

Even though Pop Rocks were thoroughly tested, people were concerned and rumors developed into myths and in time, myths into legend.

The most famous of these is that mixing the candy with carbonated drinks would cause the stomach to explode.  Although a popular rumor it is just "urban legend."  How many of you remember the story that "Mikey", the kid who from the LIFE cereal commercials, died from the "lethal" combination of Pop Rocks and Coca Cola?1

Pop Rocks Candy Packets! It was a serious problem for General Foods.  In 1979, battling the "exploding kid" rumor caused them to buy full-page ads in 45 major publications and initiate a mass mailing of letters to 50,000 school principals around the country.  They also sent the inventor on a road trip to explain that swallowing Pop Rocks would do nothing more than produce a good belch.  Despite all of these efforts, the rumors still exist today.

General Foods stopped marketing Pop Rocks around 1983.  Kraft purchased the brand and marketed it as "Action Candy" through a subsidiary company named Carbonated Candy.

Thankfully, just in time for all of our "second childhood", Pop Rocks are back "out of the closet" and sold under their "real" name.
